The activities on this site are designed for students in grades 4-8. Many of the activities are not age-appropriate for primary students.

Pay careful attention to the "safety" and "how to" sections for each activity. You can avoid injury and disorganization by carefully reading through the activity before trying it with students.

The best way to conduct the activities is to complete equipment setup prior to student participation. It is important that students spend their time engaged in the activity and not goofing off or waiting for setup. You may need to consider available staffing and organization in order to set up some of the activities before the students begin participation.

Navigation
Navigate around the site by clicking on the topic icons along the top of the page. You will see a menu of activities for each topic you select.

You can use the Forward and Back buttons on your browser as well.

Search
The search function allows you to find activities based on equipment, grade level, facility or grouping.

Click on the icon located at the bottom right hand side of each activity page to go to the search page.

The search page allows you to enter in a piece of equipment, then choose from drop-down menus of grade levels, facility types and grouping.

The search uses “AND” logic, so if you enter “basketball” and then select “grades 4-6,” what you will see is the activities for grades 4-6 that require a basketball. If you only enter “basketball,” you will see all the activities that require a basketball.

Activities
Each activity page provides the following information:

  • A brief overview of the activity
  • What You Need –equipment you need to play the game
  • Where to Play – information on the ideal location and facilities for the activity
  • Activity Description/Steps – step-by-step instructions for conducting the activity
  • How To – management tips for the activity

Many activities also have additional information:

  • Safety – specific safety tips and issues for that activity
  • Variations on the Activity – alternate or supplemental activities
  • Cooperative Activities – ways to build cooperative skills in students through the activity
  • Student Leadership – ideas for developing student leadership through the activity
  • Resources – additional online or print resources

At the bottom of each activity screen are a number of icons that provide additional information for conducting the activity:

Those that are in full color are the applicable conditions and setups for that particular activity.

Video
In many activities, you will see the following icon:

This icon lets you know that there is a video clip available for your viewing. These video clips are examples of the activity in progress, suggestions for management or safety tips.

To view a video clip, click on either dial-up or broadband based on your Internet connection speed.

Dialup refers to a telephone modem connection. If you are connecting through a non-DSL phone line, you are probably using a dialup modem. This means the computer calls a phone number and the phone line allows you access to the Internet.

Broadband connections include T-1 connections, cable modems, and DSL. If you are accessing this program through an educational institution’s computer lab, you are probably using a broadband connection.

If you make the incorrect choice for your connection speed, it will not hurt your computer! The video size for dialup is smaller so that it will download faster.
